A Message from Caroline

For many years, I have had a special connection with trees. For me, redwoods are as majestic as the greatest gothic cathedrals. Massive oaks have strength and stories to tell. Redbuds and dogwoods bring the joy of spring with their flowers. I’m generally not interested in hiking above tree line – I want to be in the trees. I notice the calming and healing benefit of large and small trees, especially when there are bushes and undergrowth that support a variety of birds. 

A few years ago, I joined Boulder Valley Rotary. Rotary has a strong service focus and one activity has been working with PLAY Boulder’s Tree Trust to plant trees. I contacted the people at PLAY Boulder Foundation asking whether it would be possible to work with them to plant 70 trees to celebrate my 70th year. They responded enthusiastically. They will let me know of the parks, schools, or housing areas in need of trees and the possible types of trees and we will develop a plan for doing so.

It would be especially great if others would do something similar. Perhaps celebrate a 10 year old birthday by having a party and planting 10 trees at their school or a local party. The children could watch the trees grow and develop their own connection to trees and the birds or native insects that would gather. Or maybe another birthday or an anniversary. By working with PLAY Boulder, we could expand the healing benefit of trees across Boulder county.

Ways you can help increase Caroline’s Canopy

• Make a donation to increase the number of trees or shrubs (large tree is approximately $150 depending on species and shrubs are approximately $25)

• Show up on the planting days to dig holes, spread mulch, and provide moral support!

• Become a steward for the longevity of these trees by keeping an eye on them throughout the year and reporting any illness or damages to our Tree Trust team.

• Do your own canopy project through PLAY Boulder and add your own corner of respite to our community!
