McGuckin Hardware Supports new PLAY Boulder Foundation Tree Trust

Store creates ‘Kiss My Ash’ slogan/shirts to support new tree planting fund and emerald ash borer education

Boulder, CO –November 29th, 2016—McGuckin Hardware is geared up to say “Kiss My Ash,” and plans to encourage other Boulder residents to do the same.

McGuckin’s, a celebrated community institution for the last 61 years in Boulder, will sell t-shirts with the slogan, “Kiss My Ash” to support the PLAY Boulder Foundation’s effort to bolster the city’s urban forest tree-planting program in the wake of the emerald ash borer’s 2013 arrival.

PLAY Boulder, a non-profit partner of the Parks and Rec department for the past 40 years, is leveraging the city’s efforts to mitigate effects of the ash borer invasion by establishing a “Tree Trust” to plant and protect an additional 1000 trees in Boulder over the next decade. PLAY will start with an immediate goal to raise $50,000 for the trust to plant 100 more trees than the city is scheduled to plant in 2017.

To benefit the Tree Trust, as well as to increase emerald ash borer education and awareness, McGuckin Hardware created a ‘Kiss My Ash’ campaign, selling slogan-centric tee shirts from their clothing racks. The shirts, featuring an ash tree emblazoned with the tongue-in-cheek slogan, will go on sale the morning of Friday, December 2nd as board members of PLAY Boulder make the ceremonial first purchases.

“We are incredibly thankful to McGuckins for their stewardship. They are a valuable community partner and we are excited to collaborate on the Tree Trust project,” says Kelly Wyatt, a PLAY Boulder board chairperson. “I can’t wait to buy my shirt!”

The emerald ash borer (EAB) is responsible for the death of 50 million ash trees in the U.S. since the 1990s and threatens all Boulder ash trees, which compose almost 13 percent of the city’s public tree population. Boulder’s Urban Forestry department plans to remove or replace around 4500 untreated ash trees around the city in the next seven years.
